Are you overweight? Obese? Know the difference?
The Kansas City Diagnostic Imaging Centers, P.A. Health & Wellmobile, seeks to provide preventative solutions and help those that are already at risk for obesity in Kansas and Missouri.
In partnership with Wellness Innovations and Nursing Services, Sun Fresh, Rawxies Healthy Treats and Hendrick Buick GMC Cadillac, the Health & Wellmobile understands the importance of educating people in Kansas City about the health risks of obesity.
In an annual report released by Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Missouri was ranked the 16th state for highest population of people who are obese. The percentages of obese people have increased dramatically over the past years. In fact, one out of every three Missourian adults is considered obese. Even more staggering, Missouri was ranked 8th in the nation for obese high school students. Ranked number 19, Kansas is almost just as bad! According to the report 30 percent of adults in Kansas are obese. Also, children that are affected by obesity in Kansas start experiencing issues in school. The Kansas City Diagnostic Imaging Centers, P.A. Health & Wellmobile is here to help! Let’s start by going over the specifics: what is obesity, how do you measure it, why is it so important to our overall health and finally and most importantly what can we do about it!
According to the Center for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), obesity is defined as someone with a body mass index (BMI) over 30. To calculate your BMI, you need to examine the correlation between your height and your weight. For example, someone who is 5-foot-9 and over 203 pounds would be considered obese.
When your BMI is over 30 and fat starts to accumulate throughout your body, your chances of experiencing the following health risks increase:
- Heart disease/heart failure
- Hypertension (high blood pressure)
- High cholesterol
- Breast, colon, endometrial, or gallbladder cancer
- Type II diabetes
- Sleep apnea
- Reproductive problems
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
The report also showed that the childhood obesity numbers have plateaued and the number of obese children living in low-income homes has decreased significantly. In order to continue to improve the statistics for youth and adults, people need to continue to focus on early childhood efforts. There also needs to be community policies and programs in place to educate people on affordable, healthy food options and physical activity opportunities that they can participate in.

Diagnostic Imaging Centers, P.A. also provides body composition measurement with Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). DEXA Scan is a medical grade test and considered the Gold Standard in body composition testing, over 99% accurate. Total body or estimated total body scans using DEXA give accurate and precise measurements of BMD (body mineral density) and body composition, including bone mineral content (BMC), lean tissue mass, fat tissue mass, and fractional contribution of fat. You may be more familiar with the DEXA scan in its analysis of bone density to screen for osteoporosis or thin bones. DEXA is also the gold standard test for assessing body composition and to determine the amount of fat in your body. It can tell you how much of your body is lean muscle and how much is fat. It can even compare side to side! This can be helpful for more precise assessment of your body composition, and help you in planning (and following) your plan of attack.
