February is American Heart Month: Are you at risk for heart disease?

  • Globally the leading cause of death is cardiovascular disease; deaths vary by ethnicity and geography. Cardiovascular disease are diseases that involve the heart, and blood vessels such as arteries, veins, and capillaries.
  • 1 in every 4 deaths in the United States annually are due to heart related issues.
  • Coronary heart disease is the most common heart disease. Coronary heart disease are issues caused by the obstruction to the blood vessels of the heart.
  • Hypertension, more popularly referred to as high blood pressure is a leading cause of heart disease.
  • Typically, men are at higher risk of experiencing heart disease than women.
  • On average 720,000 Americans experience a heart attack in a year.
  • Signs and symptoms of a heart attack: chest pain (tightness/pressure in chest), palpitations, pain typically in left arm but, does not exclude other areas such as the right arm jaw, and neck, excessive sweating, shortness of breath, unusual fatigue, nausea and vomiting.
  • Those at risk of heart attacks are usually at high risk of experiencing a stroke as well. A stroke is the loss of brain function due to blood supply.  This shortage in blood supply often shows a direct correlation with hypertension.
  • Heart diseases can be tremendously avoided and managed by proper dieting, exercising, regular screenings, and by abstaining from high risk behaviors (excessive drinking, tobacco consumption, etc.).
  • Some foods commonly consumed in a heart healthy diet are avocados, blueberries, oatmeal, flaxseed, black beans, kidney beans, almonds, tuna, and brown rice – of course, you should consult your doctor for what would be best for you.
