International Prenatal Infection Prevention Month

Outside of the United States, about 330,000 infants are infected with HIV during pregnancy, birth, or breastfeeding each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). To help fight this issue, February has been named International Prenatal Infection Prevention Month. Many local organizations like the Kansas City Health and Wellness Clinic are working to make this month a success. For those interested in helping, the following is a list of ways that support can be given for this very important cause.

Distribute Literature

Awareness is a huge part of handling these issues. Many organizations like the Kansas City Health and Wellness Clinic offer pamphlets and booklets full of information about prenatal infections. Many studies have shown that when the public is educated about problems of this nature, they are very motivated to help with volunteer hours, and contributions of money and materials.

Harness the Power of Social Media

Most clinics involved in this movement post different links for opportunities to serve on their websites. Many can help with these efforts by posting these links on social media networks like Facebook, Twitter, and personal blogs. With the power of the World Wide Web, these international efforts really can have a global impact.

Perhaps the greatest help in raising awareness is the donation of time, money, and other resources. Local clinics involved in the efforts can provide information on where to donate, and where service can be rendered.

The hope is that with more awareness and more help, the number of children born with damaging diseases will be drastically reduced. With additional awareness and funding, the risk of prenatal infections can be reduced or even eliminated.
