March is National Nutrition Month, a time to focus on the importance of making informed dietary choices as well as to educate yourself on why you need to be supplying your body with the right foods in order to fuel it. National Nutrition Month was established in 1980 due to the growing interest in the subject among the general public. Every month since then has had a theme that inspires a feeling in people and the theme of the month for 2017 is “Put Your Best Fork Forward” and is meant to remind everyone that they have the ability to make good choices when it comes to the food they are using to fuel their bodies.
This month is so crucial because it also educates people on the risks that come along with poor nutrition and the negative long-term effects they can have on your health. Poor nutrition can show itself in many different forms including overeating, under-eating, and simply eating things that have little to no nutritional value. Not implementing proper nutrition into your daily life can affect daily activity and energy levels. It can also cause diabetes, obesity, tooth decay, high blood pressure, and heart disease just to name a few complications.
The month of March is a great time to make small dietary changes and if you make an effort to continue them throughout the following months, it will make for an overall healthier lifestyle. A couple of goals that you can set for yourself this month include aiming to have at least two servings of fruit and five serves of vegetables each day, drinking more water in place of sugary drinks, and planning healthy and yummy meals for you and your family. Nutrition is a huge part of daily human life and it should be talked about more often.
