May is Global Employee Health and Fitness month, a month to observe the importance of health and fitness in the workplace as well as in every other aspect of your life. Because the average American spends one third of their day at work, it is important to incorporate healthy activities into that part of your day to increase their quality of life. The goal of this month is to provide health and fitness information and opportunities to employers and employees through worksite health promotion activities and environments.
Global Employee Health and Fitness month is striving to encourage employers to encourage their employees to create healthy moments and make healthy choices. Healthy moments and healthy choices could be anything including choosing to take the stairs instead of the elevator, picking a salad for lunch instead of a burger, or talking a fifteen minute walk around the block on their lunch break. The employers are also supposed to encourage employees to make healthy groups and culminating projects. Healthy groups are things like sports teams, cycling groups, or healthy recipe trading groups and are meant to create a sustainable healthy lifestyle that goes beyond this month. Culminating projects are activities that involve the entire community such as a 1k run, a triathlon, or planting a community garden.
Employers should all take part in this month because it has shown to increase employee productivity, reduce absenteeism, and decrease illnesses and injuries among other benefits to everyone involved. This month has also been shown to increase overall workplace demeanor by elevating moods and lowering stress levels. Health is an important part of everyone’s life and their jobs and work are a very large chunk of your day, so combining the two will make for happier, healthier, and harder working employees and a much more enjoyable workforce.
